Abu Dhabi’s Liwa has broken a world record – and it’s a big one

The 23.5-metre-high sign has been awarded a Guinness World Record.

Dubai is famous for its record-breaking attractions. Now, Abu Dhabi is in the limelight with its new Liwa sign. Located in Al Dhafra Region Municipality, the sign stands at 23.5 metres high and has been awarded a Guinness World Record.

Abu Dhabi’s Liwa sign has taken the crown from Dubai’s Hatta sign, which was inspired by the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, United States. In September 2023, Hatta’s 19.23 metre sign was awarded the recognition. The new sign weighs 49 tonnes and is 197 metres above sea level on a hill.

On X, Abu Dhabi’s Media Office shared: “ The Liwa sign, a landmark displaying the name Liwa, has entered into the @GWR for the world’s tallest landmark sign. Developed by @DRMunicipality, an affiliate of @AbuDhabiDMT, the landmark weighs 49 tonnes and stands at 23.5m tall, visually enhancing Al Dhafra Region.”

The sign is located in an area, which is famous for events ranging from Liwa International Festival to Liwa Date Festival. The family-friendly event puts Emirati hospitality and tradition in the spotlight.

Liwa International Festival brings together Emirati arts, concerts, culture and food stalls. Previous events welcomed the Hollywood stars Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson. Plus, there was an Antika and Zuma pop-up, which showcased food from the restaurants.

The Date Festival gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the finest dates and learn about the UAE’s iconic symbol. The event brings together producers from the UAE, and it’s a chance to discover its cultural significance.
